Master of Public Health:

Health Management & Policy

The Master of Public Health (MPH) combines broad training in public health with specific training in health managment and policy, to prepare graduates for a wide range of careers in health services administration, planning, policy, evaluation, consulting, and related careers. The MPH track at PSU is part of the statewide Oregon MPH program which also includes tracks at Oregon State University and Oregon Health and Science University. The goal of the program is to provide leadership in the fields of education, research, and service in all aspects of the public's health. At Portland State University the program of study for the MPH degree in health management and policy involves a total of 61 credits of work and is organized around the following five components:

  • The MPH core of 16 credits, common to all tracks in the state-wide MPH program, which includes courses on epidemiology, biometry, health systems organization, environmental health, and principles of health behavior.
  • The health management and policy concentration core of 15 credits, consists of courses in health care economics,strategic management, organizational theory and behavior, health policy, and values and ethics in health services.
  • Twelve credits of health management and policy concentration electives selected by the student from among 21 credits of available courses.
  • Twelve credits of other electives the student selects from a wide range of pertinent courses.
  • Six credits of PA 509 Organizational Experience, which serves as an in integrative, culminating field experience at or near completion of the student's program of study.

The teaching of the MPH core courses in Portland is coordinated between Portland State University and the Oregon Health & Science University. Portland State University students register through Portland State University but may take MPH courses through the Oregon Health & Science University, or through Oregon State University.  All other courses are offered at Portland State University.

Students may only take up to 12 MPH credits pre-admission. With approval, they may transfer up to 21 credits of coursework taken at another university prior to admission provided they received at least a B- grade in each course, the coursework was taken at an accredited college or university, all the courses were completed less than seven years prior to the student's completion of the MPH degree, and the Division agrees that the coursework can be applied to the student's MPH degree program. The statewide Oregon MPH is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health www.ceph.org
